On stardate 57189.4, the Enterprise was given confidential orders by Admiral Johnson to search for a secret society intending harm toward the Federation. The Enterprise was attacked by a Klingon vessel, the IKS Pak'tu, which had been lying in wait for a Starfleet vessel to prey upon. Kardok, the captain of the Pak'tu, sent a boarding party to take over engineering, while telling Picard he had peaceful intentions. Geordi La Forge and Worf managed to drive off the boarders, and a battle between the two vessels ensued. After multiple skirmishes, the Enterprise was able to disable the Pak'tu's weapons. Kardok parted with a chilling message, "We will meet again, and I will kill you." Admiral Johnson then ordered the Enterprise back to Earth, so he could speak with Picard directly, believing spies to have infiltrated Starfleet.
Later, on stardate 57823.6, the Enterprise stopped at Starbase 83 to pick up personnel. John Benson and Geordi worked diligently in the meantime to locate the Pak'tu's warp trail. They eventually did, and the Pak'tu decloaked and once again attacked them. After a short game of cat and mouse, both ships were again heavily damaged. As a last resort, Kardok transported onto the bridge of the Enterprise, trying to take over the ship and kill the bridge crew. He was nearly successful, but B-4 prevented him from doing so, driving his boarding party back to the Pak'tu. Picard ordered Worf to disable them, but the impact from the photon torpedoes destroyed the Pak'tu. All aboard were presumably killed.
The Enterprise was commanded by Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Picard had close-knit relationships with many of his senior staff members, and perhaps even a romantic one with his chief medical officer, Beverly Crusher. After hunting the IKS Pak'tu for many months, he and his crew located and defeated Captain Kardok and the crew of the Pak'tu, effectively halting X's plans to destroy the Federation.
Up until stardate 57189.4, Commander William T. Riker held the position of first officer, but he gained command of the USS Titan following the Battle in the Bassen Rift. He was replaced by Commander John Benson.
Lt. Commander Data was a member of the crew until his death during the Battle in the Bassen Rift. He transferred all of his memory into his brother, B-4, before his passing, though his brother only recalled a few memories at first. B-4 later saved the Enterprise crew from Kardok and his men.
Worf and Geordi La Forge both fought off Telnok's boarding party in engineering, and both fought Kardok's party later on the bridge. Geordi, with the assistance of John Benson, managed to locate the Pak'tu's warp trail. Worf landed the final shot that destroyed the Pak'tu, effectively halting the plans of X.
